Suboxone Missed Dos

Suboxone Missed Dos

It can be easy to miss a dose despite your best intentions when taking Buprenorphine (Suboxone®.) While missing a dose of Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) is not immediately harmful, if multiple doses are missed, it can lead to several unpleasant outcomes. This month we will answer some of the most common and pressing questions you might have when you miss a dose.

What Happens If I Miss One Dose of Buprenorphine (Suboxone®)?

If you miss one dose of Suboxone®, it is unlikely that you will have any major side effects. Suboxone® lasts in the body anywhere from 24 to 48 hours. When you remember that you have missed a single dose, it is recommended that you go ahead and take the dose, or if it is close to the time for your next dose, just wait until then. Missing a dose of Suboxone® is not a reason for panic, and you should never “panic-take” extra doses to make up for missed doses.

Can I Take a Double Dose of Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) if I Miss a Dose?

While it might seem intuitive to double-up on doses of Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) when you miss one, you should never double-dose yourself without a doctor’s recommendation. Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) has a ceiling effect which means after a certain dosage is reached, taking more will not increase its effects. This means that you cannot “catch up” on doses, only pick back up when you remember.

What Happens and What do I do if I Miss Multiple Doses?

While missing one dose of Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) is not likely to cause adverse effects, missing multiple doses of Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) will likely result in severe illness and symptoms of withdrawal. While missing doses of Suboxone® does not make it any more or less effective when used, Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) cannot work if it is not being taken regularly. If you miss multiple doses of Buprenorphine (Suboxone®), it is recommended that you begin taking Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) regularly once you remember.
